People have headed up the slopes in Lesach Valley since time immemorial. Herders have driven their cattle to the lush alpine pastures above the villages. Farmers have gathered their hay on the lofty meadows. And summer guests or mountain enthusiasts also lace up their rucksacks and shoes to head ever closer to the blue celestial skies. Sustainable travel does not need much, yet offers such plentiful rewards.
Hiking
Lesachtal Valley is home to some of Austria’s best mountaineering villages, boasting true pleasures for hikers and alpinists in the bosom of nature. Far from the madding crowds of mass tourism, around 300 kilometres of marked hiking trails invite you to explore the natural and cultural landscape. The Carnic Peace Trail stretches out not far from the Urhof.
Rock & mountain climbing
Lesachtal Valley has plenty to offer friends of dizzying heights. From taster climbing to via ferrata and challenging rocky destinations, the gateway to the Carnic Alps has everything they could possibly want. Whatever the weather, you can hone your daredevil skills at the KLE-SCH climbing and shooting centre in Dellach – around 45 minutes away.
Water sports
Summer holidays in Carinthia would not be complete without the region’s legendary lakes, first and foremost Pressegger See near Hermagor and Weissensee, which are easy to reach on a day trip. There are several indoor and outdoor swimming pool complexes directly in Lesachtal Valley. The local Liesing outdoor swimming pool is just a 1-minute stroll down the road, and the Aquarena Kötschach-Mauthen with indoor and outdoor areas is about a 45-minute drive away. Friends of wilder waters can visit the neighbouring village of Maria Luggau to embark on a kayak tour down the Gail through Europe’s most untouched valley.

Road bike, mountain bike or e-bike – the scenery is thrilling in Lesachtal Valley and the selection of routes liberating. From a lazy ride to a traditional inn to the Dolomite cycling tour (SuperGiroDolomiti), biking enthusiasts are certain to find a route that best suits their experience and demands.
